How to Protect Yourself from COVID-19 When in a Car Accident
Today, most people are traveling less due to COVID-19. With work, school and other activities shifting online there’s less of a need to leave your house. Still, that doesn’t mean you’ll never leave home. When you do, you may notice the roads are emptier, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less dangerous. Like any time you get behind the wheel, driving can still present inherent risks. In fact, some states reported a spike in car crash deaths during lockdowns. If you are in an accident, it’s important to consider new protocols amid the pandemic to keep you and anyone else involved safe.
Wear a mask
The CDC says that wearing face covering is an easy and simple way to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Keep a few spare masks in the car so that every passenger has access to one. While you don’t necessarily need to wear it while you’re driving, if you are in an accident, and not injured, put it on before getting out of the car. This will protect you and others from possibly getting sick. It also may help someone feel more comfortable approaching you to offer help.
Practice social distancing
The CDC recommends staying at least six feet away from people who are not of the same household. If you are in an accident and need to seek assistance or speak with the driver of another vehicle, try to maintain a safe distance if possible. It’s important to remember that even people with no symptoms can have and spread the virus.
Wash your hands
Even if you don’t come in physical contact with anyone following an accident, you may still want to wash or sanitize your hands. Ideally, washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is best. But, using a hand sanitizer that’s at least 60 percent alcohol-based is another option if you don’t have access to running water and soap. Just like having extra masks, keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in your car is a smart idea.
If you are in an accident
If you are involved in a car accident, prioritize your immediate safety and well-being. Check for any injuries. If you are hurt or need medical attention, call 911. If you’re not seriously hurt, check on others in your car and the other vehicles involved.
In a perfect situation, no one will suffer any injuries and your car won’t sustain serious damage. However, that’s often not the case. If you feel any serious pain, it’s important to seek medical attention. As you plan your recovery, consider visiting a chiropractor.
Chiropractic treatment is a proven method of pain relief. Often, chiropractors specialize in treating many of the injuries common after a car accident, including neck and back pain. A chiropractor can design a plan unique to your situation that can help you fully recover your strength.
